Moreover, I have experienced that just installing 64 bit vanilla cPython is a pain in the neck. There is a whole thread about that awful experience somewhere...

Maybe they have fixed it for 3.3
But we _should_ be able to provide 64 bit binaries, unless there still aren't any free 64 bit compilers available...

We do not currently provide 64 bit binaries. The 32 bit binary should be fine for most uses, and if not, you are welcome to compile your own.
